What should I expect during a well-woman exam?

A well-woman exam involves a pelvic exam and breast exam. In addition, our healthcare provider assesses your overall health and asks questions about your period or any unusual gynecological problems, such as discharge or pelvic pain. If you’re sexually active, she may discuss sexually transmitted diseases and testing as well as birth control.

When should a woman have her first well-woman exam?

Girls aged 13-15 benefit from their first well-woman exam. This exam usually does not involve a pelvic exam but includes a general review of your health and discussion of any questions about sex, your period, or your sexuality. You should have your first pelvic exam by age 21.

What is a Pap smear?

A Pap smear is a screening for cervical cancer that is performed during a pelvic exam. Our healthcare provider uses a swab to take a small sampling of cells from your cervix. These cells are sent to a lab for analysis. An abnormal Pap smear result doesn’t mean you have cervical cancer but does warrant more investigation. You should have Pap smears every three years, but if you’re older than 30, she may recommend them just every five years, if you have no history of abnormalities.

What birth control options are available?

No single birth control method is right for every woman. The type that’s best for you depends on how sexually active you are, your family plans, and your health. Our healthcare provider can help you understand your options that include:

Barrier methods, such as condoms and the diaphragm, that prevent the sperm from getting to the egg

Hormonal methods, such as birth control pills and implants, that affect your ovulation

Intrauterine devices, which are hormonal and copper devices that stay in your uterus to prevent pregnancy for years

Sterilization, such as tubal ligation, that is a permanent form of birth control

Family planning, including the rhythm method

Our healthcare provider can help you understand these options so you can settle on the one that’s best for you.
